Playing Songs From The Great American Song Book

Ann is an artist whose time has finally come. Allow her to transport you to another world. A world where scatting and improvisations are second nature and swinging with rhythms and melodies while staying true to the meaning of each composition becomes effortless. Listen and celebrate this jazz artist extraordinaire as she shares her first love and passion…the gift of song.

Ann Marie Santos (Vocalist) “Sing A Song With Passion” is her debut CD in the USA.  A seasoned jazz vocalist, she has recorded extensively in the Philippines.  Her career began officially at the tender age of six.  Her father--composer, arranger, and jazz pianist--and her mother, a well-known jazz singer, instilled in her a love of music tempered with the discipline of piano and vocal studies at the University of Santo Thomas.  In her teens, Ann Marie won the prestigious Star Search of Asia Award.  She expanded on this and other early achievements by obtaining roles on established television shows in Manila, where she started as a Tele-Ad Television Promo for advertising and often became a regular guest artist on television and continued on performing at the Hyatt, Mandarin, Manila Hotels in Manila. She signed with Black Gold and Villar Records and recorded many of her own compositions.
Every musical project has an evolutionary process and Ann Marie’s project is no exception.  An established vocal coach, she has dedicated her time to teaching her passion, her love of singing, to students of all ages for many years.  Recording and developing her career in a new country without the extensive support system she experienced in the Phiippines as an established recording artist was a daunting task.
Undeterred, she began to network, to perform in clubs such as The Scottish-Rite Theatre, Savanna Jazz Club, Yoshi’s, etc. and many other events in the San Francisco/Bay Area, and to build a fan base.  This marks the beginning of a wonderful musical collaboration.
The San Francisco Filipino American Jazz Festival has featured Ann Marie at concerts over the past few years, most notably as guest artist of our Festival at the SF Pistahan and Parade at Yerba Buena Gardens in 2009 and at the Jazz History Month Celebration at the SF Main Public Library in 2010. She had recently performed at Yoshi’s in San Francisco on October 9, 2011 with Winston Raval, Rey Cristobal, Boy Palacio and other Jazz Artists and continues to perform at Jazz Venues in the Bay Area
There is no doubt that she has musical chops and talent in abundance.  Santos has brought together the crème of the crème of first-call musicians in the Bay Area.  In live performances, the minute she begins to sing, the audience is transported to another place and time, when vocalists owned the stage and delivered a world-class performance.  Listen to Ann Marie’s delivery of “You Don’t Know What Love Is” and “It’s Alright With Me,” “Old Devil Moon,” “Cry Me A River,” “Lover Man,” and “Fever.”  These songs can be sung convincingly only by a person who has experienced and tasted life—and by someone who has the musical ability to be playful, to scat, to improvise, to swing with rhythms and melodies at will while remaining true to the original compositions.  On “Gypsy In My Soul,” Anne Marie rocks it—going back and forth between Latin jazz and straight ahead grooves.  Her own compositions, “I Was Only Dreaming,” and "Come Back"  has an ethereal quality—it is tender and wistful.
Ann Marie Santos is an artist and a voice whose time has come.  Listen, remember, and celebrate this jazz vocalist extraordinaire as she shares her first love and passion—the gift of song.
Boy Palacio (Piano): A byword in the jazz scene, Dioscoro Palacio, popularly known as “Boy” has migrated in the United States in 1983.  He is a distinguished jazz musician, pianist, composer, arranger, band leader, and a musical director of three popular TV stations in the Philippines.
Boy’s travels as a professional musician included Japan, Hong Kong, Iran, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to name a few, and other major cities in the United States.  “Hitoritabe” (I Walk Alone) composed by Boy Palacio in 1970 was one of the top hits in Japan.  The melody which touches on the Southern Philippines (Visayan) sentiment caught the attention of popular songwriter, Fumiko Okada of Tokyo, provided the lyrics
He was the Musical Director of FAMAS Award in 1977 and was also voted as the “Best Jazz Group” in Manila in the late 70s.
He is now focused on composing jazz pieces.  He is also active as an arranger of his business – producing minus-one-music.  He also does musical arrangements for Chabot College which are performed by the amateur and professional jazz bands.  His youngest son, Jon Palacio is the Director of Jazz Studies at Chabot College.  Boy remains humble about his successes and generous with his talents.  He is a talent and role model to emulate, a God sent, who serves humanity through his music.
